Biography
Daniel Hesidence’s (b. 1975, Akron OH) paintings are both abstract and representational, veering between the modernist and primordial. Driven by the materiality of paint and employing new methods for each series, Hesidence’s work has been described as at once joyful, frustrating, ecstatic, gross, buoyant and blithe, yet always evoking the phantasmagoric.
Hesidence has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Place Holders at CANADA, New York (NY) in 2018; Summers Gun at Journal Gallery, New York (NY) in 2014, which traveled to CANADA in 2015; and Autumn Buffalo at D’Amelio Gallery, New York (NY) in 2010.
Recent group exhibitions include Neo-Abstraction at the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens in 2021; Time-Slip at Petzel Gallery, New York (NY) in 2021; The Thick Stream at CANADA, New York (NY) in 2021; sotto voce at Bortolami Gallery, New York (NY) in 2020; and The Old, the New, the Different at Kunsthalle Bern (CH) in 2012. Hesidence was also included in The Encyclopedic Palace, curated by Massimiliano Gioni, at the 55th Venice Biennale (IT) in 2013. In 2005, the artist was included in Greater New York at P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City (NY).
