These paintings convey implications of nature and are suggestive of atmospheric elements like mountain ranges or ocean waves. As a group, this series of paintings are dense, dark and moody and are usually given roman numerals as titles. The title Sheaves, however, directly references agriculture and the harvesting of wheat and grain. A sheaf is the bunch of stems that are bound together after reaping and cutting the grain. The colors and poetic, rhythmic mark-making in this work mimic the vertical and calligraphic nature of the artist’s earliest abstract expressionist works. \n\nLewis’s oeuvre, and transition to transcendental abstraction in the 70’s demonstrates his acute ability to move freely between various styles of art.
